Nikon N70 film recognition problem

I loaded film into my camera and it usually recognizes the speed automatically and advances the film for the first shot. It isn't doing that this time. After the film was loaded, I had to press the button a couple of times and then it advanced, but it never recognized the speed. Any thoughts on what might be the problem...thanks.
